Conveyor Belt, Sawdust Fire Breaks Out at B.C. Sawmill

February 7, 2017

Officials are eying overheated bearings as the cause of a conveyor belt fire at the Canfor sawmill in Fort St. John, B.C. on Monday night, according to a report by news website EnergeticCity.ca posted Tuesday.

The Charlie Lake and Fort St. Johns fire departments were dispatched to the scene after a call reporting the fire just before midnight, finding that a fire had broken out on a conveyor belt attached to a hopper bin, Fort St. John Fire Chief Fred Burrows told the website. Sawdust on the belt had also caught fire, the report said.

Crews worked for about an hour and a half to put out the blaze, Chief Burrows said in the report. The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, but the chief told the website that overheated bearings were considered a probable reason.

No information on damages or injuries during the incident was included in the website’s report.
