Dust Collector Explosion, Fire Forces Plant Evacuation

January 24, 2017

A dust explosion and fire at the NPR of America Inc. manufacturing plant in Grand Haven Township, MI on Saturday prompted the evacuation of workers from the site, the Grand Haven Tribune reported Monday.

Three fire departments responded to the incident at about 5 p.m. finding workers had already evacuated the smoke-filled 120,000-sq-ft plant, the paper reported. First responders put out a fire in the site’s dust collection system and another small fire in the plant’s exhaust system where fine particles collected in the bend of a pipe, Lt. Matt Schweitzer of the Grand Haven Township Fire Rescue told the Tribune.

Schweitzer said initial reports suggested an explosion was sparked during maintenance on the dust collector. Staff told firefighters that they saw a “30-foot-long fire ball” in the wake of the explosion that quickly went out.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, the Tribune said.

NPR manufactures piston rings, pistons, cylinder liners, and valve seat inserts for the automotive industry.
