$1 million in grant funding is now available for education and training programs that help ensure safety in America’s mines, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) announced Wednesday.
The programs funded by the grants would help attending mine operators and miners recognize, avoid, and prevent unsafe working conditions associated with mines. MSHA said the funding will have a “special emphasis” on programs that cater to miners at small operations.
Those awarded grants will receive at least $50,000 and up to the maximum individual award of $250,000. Some projects may receive incremental funding based on milestones and the availability of funding, the agency said.
The closing date for applications, which are accepted through grants.gov, is March 24, 2017.
